As the opposition party skipped a House hearing in South Texas under Republican leadership, the speaker of the House declared on Friday that Democrats are unable to confront what is actually taking place at the southern border.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., spoke on ‘Fox & Friends’ to discuss the southern border situation and how Republicans are attempting to find solutions on their own without the assistance of Democrats.
“This is the situation that is happening, and the Democrats won’t even do something about it. The worst-case scenario is that they strive to avoid it and ignore it since they are aware of what they have produced.”
Prior to canceling the hearing earlier this week, Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee said they would attend the in-person field hearing at the southern border on Wednesday morning, even going so far as to reserve their travel and call a witness.
A GOP spokesperson told Fox News that they even went so far as to book their travel and call a witness.
According to McCarthy, the hearings are held at the border so that Democrats will no longer have an excuse to ignore the situation.
“I first reported that individuals on the terrorism watch list were arriving three years ago. The Democrats also accused me of lying about it. They have disregarded this issue. It’s becoming too significant to ignore. Yet drug overdoses and car crashes claim the lives of Americans every day.”
More Terrorists Emerge
The number of border interactions with people on the terrorist watch list increased from 15 in the fiscal year 2021 to 98 in the fiscal year 2022, according to CBP data.
Republicans are traveling to the border to attack the administration and try to score political points with their extreme rhetoric, Ranking Member Bennie Thompson said in a statement, which is why Democrats refused to attend the border hearing.
“Instead of a fact-finding mission to develop better border security and immigration policies, Republicans are traveling to the border to attack the Administration and try to score political points with their extreme rhetoric,” he added.
