The idea of CPAC being ‘woke’ these days does not sit well with conservatives. Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida, has frequently claimed that his state is where “woke goes to die.”
Donald Trump, a former president, has complained that generals are too ‘woke.’ This week, DeSantis skipped the Conservative Political Action Conference outside of Washington. Others, though, emphasized wokeness.
“I’m running for president to renew an America that’s proud and strong, not weak and woke,” declared presidential candidate Nikki Haley. On the first day of the conference, Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville gave a speech titled ‘Sacking the Woke Playbook.’
Regarding the acceptance of transgender athletes, Tuberville stated, “Today, they are being indoctrinated with all these woke transgender athletes, CRT, and 1619.”
Tuberville was referring to the 1619 Project, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist’s project for The New York Times that explores the role of slavery in the founding of the United States. He also mentioned critical race theory, a legal theory that many conservatives have used as a catch-all.
As recently as the 1940s, Black Americans primarily used the term ‘woke’ as a way to express their awareness of racism in their environment. It later became a common term in African American Vernacular English (AAVE). But, many activists at CPAC had a different view. The conference’s guest speaker, Pennsylvanian conservative activist Marleen Laska, gave a broad description of what ‘woke’ means.
She specifically mentioned investing strategies for social and environmental governance. DeSantis’ campaign against the idea of being ‘woke” according to Rogerson, was essential to the state’s success. It is not necessary to employ the word ‘woke,’ according to Rogerson, to talk about racism.
Sheila Armstrong, a colleague of Rogerson’s who works with the organization’s Philadelphia chapter, had a somewhat different explanation. Young Americans for Liberty’s northeast regional director, Angelo Veltri, offered a similarly hazy explanation of the meaning of the phrase. He explained to The Independent that being ‘woke’ meant basing one’s world more on emotions and fiction than on actual facts.

CPAC ‘Woke’ Meaning
The term ‘woke,’ which initially denoted a widespread awareness of systems of injustice, was first used in African American vernacular English. But in recent years, the right has appropriated the term and frequently uses it to refer to progressive policies, notions, and methods of thinking. The term also appeared to cover all that conservatives appeared to detest about the world among those present at the right-wing conference.
Francis, who claimed to educate his own children, believes that the term ‘woke’ conjures up an educational system that encourages social separation. Nevertheless, it also serves as the impetus for a broader range of policy worries, and in his opinion, the Republican Party isn’t doing enough to address them.
The conference’s presenters also brought up the topic of wokeness, using it in a number of settings. He made broad assertions regarding a left-wing strategy to undermine established gender and sexuality norms, even saying at one point that they want one gender.
In an interview with Insider, Nigel Farage, the former leader of Brexit and member of the European Parliament who was spotted Friday wandering about the conference, defined wokeness as a level of political correctness that is simply unusual.
In a George Washington costume and waving a flag he claimed to have carried on the mall on January 6, 2021, James Winship, 68, of Virginia told Insider that ‘woke’ was used in place of political correctness since the latter phrase sounded too much like political corruption. The gospel of woke is the idea that all things in America are evil, according to Newsmax presenter and GOP Senate candidate for New York in 2022 Joe Pinion. He made this statement during a discussion about how conservatives should appeal to young people.
A student at the conference named Jackson Stallings, 21, described wokeness as a synthesis of this transgenderism thing, leftism, and critical racial theory. Several participants also homed in on gender and sexuality problems as being key to what defines ‘woke,’ including Susan Vandeberghe, 65, who was volunteering for CPAC after traveling to the conference from Michigan.
