On January 20, 2024, Jon Joseph Freesmeier, 52, of Cedar Rapids, departed gently with his loved ones by his side. The funeral ceremony will commence at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hiawatha, following a viewing that starts at 9:00 a.m.

Later, a private burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. As of yet, there is no information available on the cause of Jon Freesmeier’s death. His family is requesting discretion and understanding at this trying time.

Jon Joseph Freesmeier: Who Was He?

On November 2, 1971, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, Jon was born into a family of Delmar and Cheryl (Mullahy) Freesmeier. He attended West Point, Iowa’s Marquette High School. After that, in 1995, he graduated from the University of Iowa with honors in mechanical engineering. In 1997, he completed his studies and obtained a master’s degree in engineering.

Jon was employed at Collins Aerospace, Maytag, and TRW Automotive. Throughout his career, he patented nine inventions, including airbags, freezers, and cockpit displays. He was a gifted engineer.

On May 22, 1999, Jon married Michele McDermott. After moving to Arizona, they welcomed Nathan, their first child, into their family in January 2002. After that, they moved back to Iowa, where Claire, their second child, was born in February 2005. The family enjoyed traveling and went on several excursions together.

The children of Jon and Michele, Nathan and Claire, survive him. Delmar and Cheryl Freesmeier are his parents. Along with his brother-in-law Jason (Dede) and Aaron McDermott, sister-in-law Kristi (Gerry Notara) McDermott, mother-in-law Maureen McDermott, and sister Maria (Micheal) Beamer all survive him.

He also leaves William Beamer, Sam, Rachel, Rebecca, and Anna McDermott as nieces and nephews. Louis and Della Freesmeier, as well as Jon’s grandparents, James and Alice Mullahy, passed away before him. Ken McDermott, his father-in-law, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins predecease him.
