San Antonio residents can now take advantage of the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed last year, which also focuses on the electric upgrade that reduces emissions, and create climate change mitigation efforts. Some of its benefits will not be available in 2023.
The act put billions of dollars toward tax credits and direct rebates for electric upgrades such as electric vehicles and home appliances, including heat pumps, high-efficiency clothes dryers, weatherization, and induction electric stoves, which all Texas residents, regardless of income level, can take advantage of.
The rebates for low-income Texans to high-efficiency electric upgrade alternatives have been allocated nearly $700 million by the federal government. Texans who opt for electric upgrades by buying high-efficiency appliances, such as heat pumps, can receive direct rebates from the state. The rebates cover between 50% and 100% of the cost of purchasing and installing the appliances, with the exact percentage depending on the recipient’s income. In addition, low-income residents of Texas can also receive rebates for electric panel upgrades, while higher-income residents can receive a tax credit for a portion of the cost.

According to Environment Texas, although many components of the IRA will target the underlying causes of climate change, the state will need to adopt strategies for both mitigation and adaptation to combat the impacts of climate change, particularly in the Texas Coast region. According to Colin Leyden, who is the political director at the Environmental Defense Fund, adopting high-efficiency electric upgrade appliances would not only lead to personal cost savings but also lessen the strain on Texas’ electrical grid. He also encouraged renters to reach out to their landlords or management companies about replacing electric panels, cooling systems, and weatherization to save the property owner money and reduce utility costs for tenants.
The IRA also offers rebates and tax credits for electric vehicles, depending on income. By plugging in the zip code, income, tax filing status, household size, and homeowner status, residents can determine what rebates or tax credits they qualify for through the IRA calculator made by Rewiring America, a nonprofit national electrification.
Leyden believes that the IRA funds will be transformative for the state of Texas, generating jobs and making homes more efficient while saving Texans a lot of money. With the IRA, San Antonio residents can now use free federal dollars for electric upgrades and pay for new electric home appliances, contributing to a greener, more energy-efficient future.
