Police Chase Ends in Devastating Crash, Claims Lives of Three Young Texas Athletes

A tragic event occurred in a Texas community on Thursday when three former high school student-athletes passed away in a car accident that involved a police chase and ended in a fiery crash.

Phabian Bynaum, 19, Davarius Bynaum, 20, and Malik Thomas, 21, all of whom had previously attended Cameron High School, died in the accident. According to Milam County Sheriff Mike Clore, Phabian Bynaum was driving more than 20 mph over the speed limit on U.S. 190 between Cameron and Milano when one of the Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop the vehicle. However, Bynaum did not pull over, and instead, a chase ensued.

Bynaum eventually lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to pass another car, causing the vehicle to crash into a tree, barrel through a fence, flip, and catch fire in a field. The Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) stated that the accident was fatal for all three occupants of the vehicle.

The community of Cameron is mourning the loss of these young men, with a prayer vigil held on Friday to honor their memory. Cameron ISD Superintendent Kevin Sprinkles stated that counselors would be made available for students and staff at each of the district’s schools.

The accident serves as a reminder of the dangers of attempting to evade law enforcement in a motor vehicle. According to Texas state law, when an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens on approaches, motorists are required to pull over to the right side of the roadway and stop. The TXDPS released a statement reminding the public that “attempting to evade law enforcement in a motor vehicle is not only a felony, but it also places everyone on the roadways in danger.”

This tragic accident has deeply affected the families of the three young Texas athletes, as well as their community. These boys were beloved members of their community and will be deeply missed by all who knew them.
