Homeland Security extends the enforcement of the Real ID deadline to 2025 May 7, from May 2023. The organization has shared the reason for the extension as the COVID-19 Pandemic. The process of issuing the ID or license got slowed because of the pandemic. Hence, regular travelers can be less concerned about the law for another couple of years.
What are Real IDs?
As per the Real ID Act of 2005, every traveler in the USA has to carry a Real ID while flying on domestic flights. However, this rule hasn’t been in effect till now. The date has been fixed to approve the law on May 3, 2023. But it got extended due to the slow process issues during the pandemic.
As per Trib Live, the extension is important to fulfill the security purposes in issuing the IDs. The state authorities should have enough time to offer every citizen the Ids that will help them move domestically by airways.
The information was shared by Homeland Security on Twitter on Monday night. After the act’s enforcement, carrying Real ID will be mandatory for domestic flight passengers. Along with flights, entering any federal will also require the IDs. These IDs will be carried as licenses by the public.

What does the Real ID Act suggest?
The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 by the Congress party considering the security factors of airways in the USA. The Act was necessary following the terrorist attacks in the country on 9/11. The Incident made the government and the citizen of the nation question their air security status.
It is learned that the terrorists of the 9/11 incident were carrying fake licenses and IDs of being American citizens and led the havoc in the USA. So, there was an urgent need to enhance the license standards of the citizens so that creating fake Ids becomes impossible. The Act was supposed to get enforced multiple times in the past but got extended.
