Meaning of Flags Flying at Half-Staff
Remembering when the entire country is mourning is a simple method of remembering when to fly the American flag at half-staff, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
When a current or past member of the federal, state, or territorial government or the judiciary passes away, these periods of mourning are either declared by the president of the United States for national commemoration or by the governor of a state or territory for local remembering.
The flag may be placed at half-staff on structures, lands, and naval vessels under the control of the heads of governmental departments and agencies.
Only from dawn until noon on Memorial Day should the flag be flown at half-staff; after that, it should be quickly hoisted to the top of the staff until dusk in remembrance of the nation’s war heroes.
After the death of the President or a previous President, the flag shall be lowered to half-staff for thirty (30) days at all government buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories and possessions.
After the vice president, the chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States or retired chief justice, or the speaker of the House. The time depends on the position of the prominent individual.
