Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) revealed on Monday that her home in Georgia was subjected to a “swatting” incident while she was celebrating Christmas with her family. The term “swatting” refers to the act of making a false report to authorities, prompting a police response to the targeted individual’s location.
Expressing her dismay on social media, Greene shared, “I was just swatted. This is like the 8th time. On Christmas with my family here.” Despite the distressing situation, she commended her local police, emphasizing their professionalism and expressing gratitude for their efforts. In her post on X (formerly Twitter), Greene conveyed that her family was in a joyous spirit, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
However, Greene did not provide details about the specific crime that was falsely reported to the police, nor did she disclose which police department responded to the incident. She did, however, allude to a recent death threat she had received in previous social media posts.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Greene did not offer additional information when queried by the Washington Examiner. Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the Rome City Police Department released a statement explaining that the authorities received a call through the local suicide hotline, triggering their response.
Kelly Madden, the department’s public information officer, clarified, “As we were preparing to respond, we reached out to her security detail, and it was determined that there wasn’t any emergency.” Madden noted that this wasn’t the first time such incidents had occurred.
Greene had mentioned receiving a death threat on X a few days prior, sharing screenshots of messages allegedly sent to her by a user on the platform. The content of the threat involved graphic language, including references to violence. It remains unclear whether this specific threat was connected to the “swatting” incident on Christmas.
One of the shared screenshots included an email from the U.S. Capitol Police addressing the threats received by Greene. The email detailed how the suspect responded to questioning from law enforcement officers regarding the threatening comments made online.
While “swatting” incidents can be unsettling and potentially dangerous, Greene’s handling of the situation reflects a commitment to maintaining a positive atmosphere for her family during the holiday season. As she navigates these challenges, the incidents underscore the broader issue of online threats and harassment faced by public figures and the need for vigilance in addressing such concerns.
