A class-action lawsuit was filed against a group of companies selling chicken. If you have been buying chicken from them from 2009 through 2020, you might be eligible for payment.
According to reports, the class action lawsuit is asking for a settlement of $181 million. The companies against whom the lawsuit was filed are Fieldale Farms Corporation, George’s, Mar-Jac Poultry, Peco Foods, Pilgrim’s Pride, and Tyson Foods. The lawsuit alleges that these companies conspired to stabilize the price and supply of chicken. Doing so is a violation of federal and state consumer antitrust laws.
The amount of the settlement was posted through a notice by the law firm representing the plaintiffs on Friday. It was posted with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The settlement is still pending final approval by the court, and such a hearing is expected to take place on December 20, 2021. Once approved, the defendants will pay the money.
The people eligible to claim from the settlement if finalized are those who purchased a fresh or frozen raw chicken. Chicken meat marketed as halal, kosher, free-range, or organic is not included in the settlement. People from the following states are the only ones eligible to receive payment: California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin.
The money that eligible people can claim has not been determined yet as it is dependent on the number of claimants. The settlement will likewise pay for attorney’s fees of no more than 33.3 percent plus the total costs, believed to be around $8.75 million. Everything left after the legal fees, and costs will be distributed to the members of the settlement class.
