A couple, a nurse and a middle school teacher from California, recently died from complications after contracting COVID-19 upon their return from a family vacation in early August, leaving behind five kids.
The family tested positive after their trip. While the kids recovered quickly, Davy Macias, 37, along with Daniel Macias, 39, developed worse symptoms. They were both taken to the hospital days apart and placed in the intensive care unit “a couple of rooms apart,” Fox News reported. They eventually succumbed to the virus weeks apart, joining over 660,000 people in the U.S. who have died of the coronavirus. The couple orphaned four kids aged 7, 5, 3, 2, along with their unnamed 3-week-old baby daughter.
Davy Macias, an OB RN at Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center, had floated almost all her shifts to a COVID-19 unit. In a Facebook post, she shared, “I floated to covid med surge and covid ICU…”
She had been seven months pregnant when she was hospitalized. Though she was “optimistic” about her recovery, she was later intubated as her condition worsened, prompting the doctors to deliver her daughter via Cesarean section on Aug. 18. Eight days after giving birth, on August 26, the frontliner and mother of five passed away.
Her husband, Daniel Macias, was a middle school teacher at Jehue Middle School in Colton, California, before he got hospitalized days after his wife. He was reportedly waiting for his wife to recover before naming their daughter. Unfortunately, even he only saw his newborn baby for a short period, before he got intubated three days later. He lost the battle against the virus nearly two weeks after his wife did, on Sept. 10.
Terri Serey, Davy Macias’ sister-in-law, set up a GoFundMe page for the kids. In it, she described the couple as “the kindest, most amazing people. They were the ones who got everyone together — for every birthday, every holiday.”
“There aren’t words to explain the loss of both him and Davy,” Terri shared. She urged everyone to “Keep the kids in your thoughts and prayers. They gained two angels but still have a long road ahead of them.”
Davy’s brother, Vong Serey, had said that Davy died unvaccinated because she was hesitant to do so while pregnant. It was unclear if Daniel was vaccinated.
