Texas Couple Arrested Over Texas Veteran’s Mauling
Christian Moreno and Abilene Schnieder, a Texas couple, have been arrested and charged with felony offenses concerning the mauling of 81-year-old Air Force veteran Ramon Najera in San Antonio. At least two of the couple’s three American Staffordshire Terriers attacked Najera, resulting in his death and injuries to his wife and two others. The dogs were not wearing collars or harnesses, which is a requirement of Animal Control Services (ACS). The couple was allegedly breeding and training the dogs to be aggressive with meat according to News 4 San Antonio.

The incident highlights the need for responsible pet ownership and strict regulations to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. The dogs involved in the attack had a history of biting incidents, and neighbors had repeatedly complained about neglect on the owners’ part. Despite the complaints, the dogs were returned to the couple by ACS as per state law.
Schnieder claimed that the dogs had noticeable behavior changes after a stay with ACS, where they were quarantined following a January attack. However, the dogs were returned to the couple after finishing their state-required quarantine. Schnieder denied the accusations of neglect and said that they always made sure the gates were closed and that the dogs had their harnesses on.
Najera’s family said in a statement on GoFundMe that he is an adventurous and loving family man who was determined to enjoy life despite his health condition.
The incident serves as a reminder that neglectful pet ownership and training animals to be aggressive can have deadly consequences. It is essential to prioritize the safety of pets, their owners, and the community by adhering to regulations and responsible pet ownership.
