24-Year-Old Minnesota Man Sentenced For Kidnapping And Torturing A Man in 2021

According to a published post by True Crime Daily, the Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota stated that Jose Angel Chapa-Aguilera lured a man into a home to confront him about a drug debt. Using two women the victim was lured to the home and asked to come inside, where Chapa-Aguilera was waiting.

In accordance with the official statements, Chapa-Aguilera pulled out a gun and ordered the man to the ground. After that, he tied his hands behind his back and proceeded to beat and torture the victim for hours using a heated knife and a pipe due to a perceived drug debt.

Chapa-Aguilera demanded money from the victim and barricaded him inside a crawlspace under the residence, the Attorney’s Office said. The victim was fortunate enough to have been able to escape and call for help. A neighbor told the authorities that the victim’s eye was severely swollen and the size of a golf ball.

The Attorney’s Office stated that the victim suffered extensive injuries, including numerous burns, broken ribs, and a large laceration above his eye, and required a blood transfusion. After the said incident, an investigation followed, and upon searching the residence, the authorities reportedly recovered around 3 pounds of methamphetamine.

January 7, a month after kidnapping the victim, Chapa-Aguilera was found and arrested after a hot pursuit involving a purple camouflage Humvee in the Twin Cities. The officers stated that they were able to disable the vehicle and pull Chapa-Aguilera over, the Attorney’s Office said. A 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and several rounds of 9 mm ammunition were reportedly found in the said vehicle.

Chapa-Aguilera pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and one count of possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine according to the Attorney’s Office.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, he was sentenced to 289 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release. According to WCCO, the two women who drove the victim to the home were charged as co-defendants in separate complaints.
