Kelvin Kiptum Cause of Death and Obituary
Recently the news of the death of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum is coming to light. Kelvin Kiptom died on 11 February 2024 in Kapitan, Kenya at the age of 24. The cause of death of Kelvin Kiptom was a car accident.
On 11 February at 11 pm local time, Kelvin Kiptom died in a traffic accident on a road between Chepkorio and Eldoret, Kenya. Kelvin was accompanied by his coach Gervais Hakizimana, who also died.
Local police said that, Kelvin lost control of his car, after which his car went off the road before entering a ditch and hitting a tree.
Police commander for Elgeyo Marakwet County, Peter Mulinge said- “The car had three occupants, two died on the spot, while one was taken to hospital. The two are Kiptum and his coach.”
He told reporters- “It is Kiptum who was driving heading to Eldoret and the vehicle lost control and rolled, killing the two on the spot. A female passenger sustained injuries and has been rushed to hospital.”
World Athletics remembered Kiptum as “one of the most exciting new prospects to emerge in road running in recent years”.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said in a statement- “We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.”
“On behalf of all World Athletics, we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates and the Kenyan nation.”

Coe said only last week he had been in Chicago “to officially ratify” Kiptum’s historic time.“An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly.”
