What Happened to Gus Alfieri? Who is He?
Gus Alfieri passed away. He was a brilliant basketball player at St. John’s who went on to become an author and a highly successful high school coach. His age was 87.
A family member notified the school about Alfieri’s passing on Monday, according to St. John’s. The reason for death was not stated.
In the final, a 76-71 victory against Bradley in double overtime at Madison Square Garden, Alfieri scored 15 points to help St. John’s win the 1959 National Invitation Tournament. He played in 72 career games over three seasons from 1956–59, averaging 10.8 points and 4.1 rebounds. In October, he was admitted as a member of the 2023 class into the university’s Hall of Fame.
Gus Alfieri’s Profession:
After graduating from college, Alfieri took a position as head coach at Long Island’s Saint Anthony’s High School. From 1968 to 1986, he oversaw the program’s 328 victories, four NSCHSAA Championships, and two New York State championships. In 2016, the basketball court at St. Anthony’s was given a new name in his honor.
In 2016, Alfieri was elected into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame after overseeing the All-American Basketball Camp on Long Island for over 50 years.
Alfieri, a teacher as well, wrote a book on his mentor at St. John’s, Hall of Fame coach Joe Lapchick. More than 250 interviews with basketball greats including Lou Carnesecca, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Knight, and John Wooden were used to create “Lapchick: The Life of a Brilliant Game and Coach in the Glory Days of Basketball.”
Memorial for Gus Alfieri:
According to St. John’s, a funeral mass will be celebrated early on Saturday morning at Christ the King Church in Commack, and a viewing will be held at the Branch Funeral Home in Smithtown on Thursday and Friday.
