Albina Yevko’s travel to the United Kingdom was full with hope and dreams of a better life. She took sanctuary in the Dawlish community with her mother, Inna, hoping to create a new home and discover prospects for a better future. Albina’s vivid attitude and tenacity affected the lives of those who knew her, making her death all the more tragic.
What happened to 14-Year-Old Albina Yevko?
Albina fell four metres down the exposed edge of the wall beside the railway line into the concrete below early this year. Albina was discovered unconscious on the beach despite the courageous efforts of multiple emergency personnel, and she later died from major impact injuries. Emergency personnel arrived quickly, exhibiting incredible bravery and determination in their efforts to save Albina’s life. Despite their best attempts, Albina was discovered comatose on the shore, and her injuries were too severe. The entire community mourns the loss of this young child, and our hearts go out to her bereaved mother, Inna, at this unbearably terrible time.

The sad tragedy has sparked a call for better safety measures along the sea wall. Inna has been at the vanguard of these appeals, advocating for measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. On Change.org, a petition called “Albina’s Petition” has been started to make the old Dawlish Sea Wall secure enough to avoid another fatality. In light of Albina’s untimely death, Network Rail, which is responsible for maintaining the barrier, has come under fire for suspected safety failings. Albina’s neighbourhood, friends, and her bereaved mother continue to demand accountability and greater safety measures.
