Melissa Highsmith was kidnapped in 1971 when she was just 22 months old. As per the news covered by ABC4, Melissa’s mother required a babysitter when she was a toddler and issued an advertisement accordingly. A responder to the ad joined the position immediately. The child was abducted by the same babysitter. After trying hard, neither Melissa’s parents nor the police could find her.
How was Melissa found?
After 51 years of abduction, in September 2022, Melissa’s family received an insight regarding her location. The tip stated that she was sighted in Daniel Islands. Her father and brother headed toward the location, and finally last Saturday, they found her in James Islands. For identification purposes, the 23 and Me DNA test was done following the result that the found person is their lost daughter and sister.
According to Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the family members of Melissa confirmed her identity after tracing her birth date and birthmark. Neither police nor other organizations were involved in the process of finding her. The family members of Melissa declared the news through Facebook and shared their joy. The family requested the media and the public some moments of privacy to process this miracle.
