In the 1973, National Football League Draft, Dave was drafted in the first round (fifth overall) by St. Louis Cardinals where he played for two seasons. George Allen; Redskins coach, gave the Cardinals two first-round draft picks and a second-rounder for the right to Dave. A mistake was made in the contract that he signed as a Rookie in 1973, and as a result of this Dave was granted free agency in 1975. George quickly signed him but had to pay the Cardinal 2 first-round picks as NFL ruled them.

Dave played for 14 years for the Redskins, where he had three super Bowl appearances. He ranked third in the franchise history in Sacks. He gave an excellent performance for the Redskins and at one of the victory parades following the Redskins win in Super Bowl XXII, Dave famously shouted to the audience, “We came, we saw, we kicked their Butz.”
