On Monday, Andrew Yang announced that he has changed his voter registration from Democratic to Independent, reports Axios.com. He said the move is a “strangely emotional experience.”
Yang has been a Democrat for years and has many friends and confidantes rooted in the said party, but Yang has expressed that he is “confident that no longer being a Democrat is the right thing.”
Yang Calls Two-Party System “Stuck”
According to Yang, he has always been at odds with the Democratic Party, saying, “I’m not very ideological. I’m practical. Making partisan arguments — particularly expressing what I often see as performative sentiment — is sometimes uncomfortable for me.”
“I’m actually more comfortable trying to fix the system than being a part of it,” he added.
“My goal is to do as much as I can to advance our society. Phenomenal public servants are doing great work every day — but our system is stuck. It is stuck in part because polarization is getting worse than ever.”
Yang Is Set To Release His Own Book
His announcement followed just a day before he released his book entitled “Forward: Notes on the Future of Our Democracy.”
According to its publisher, Crown, the book will introduce people “to the various ‘priests of the decline’ of America, including politicians whose incentives have become divorced from the people they supposedly serve.”
Yang ran unsuccessfully for president in 2020 and for mayor of New York this year. He said he could be more “honest” about politics if he were not a Democrat.
