A Texas restaurant owner recently asked a family, who has an immunocompromised child, to leave the restaurant for wearing masks.
Natalie Wester and her husband together with their four-month-old child went to Rowlett’s Hang Time, a restaurant and bar in Texas, northeast of Dallas, Insider reported.
In a Facebook post, Wester said that they were asked to take off their masks upon arrival in the restaurant. She said that they were not able to clearly hear the instruction because of the loud music so they brushed it aside. But half an hour into the restaurant, a waitress asked them to remove their masks for “political reasons.”
Wester said that she was told that “Our manager sent me over because I’m nicer than he is. And yes, this is political.”
“She [the waitress] then told me that masks are not allowed in their building, and they can make the rules because they are private business,” Wester added.
She also said that they were given the unscientific explanation that the mask doesn’t work and it was the same as “using a chain-link fence to keep out mosquitoes, and doesn’t give people enough oxygen.”
Wester also mentioned that her child is immunocompromised and will have to be hospitalized if he gets the COVID-19 virus. She also said that whenever they are out, which is not too often, they choose to wear a mask.
The restaurant owner, Tom, defended that not wearing a mask was a policy and it was part of the restaurant’s dress code.
“I have spent my money on the business, my blood sweat and tears in this business, and I don’t want masks in here,” he said. He also added that people who want to wear masks can refuse his service.
But according to CBS DFW reports, the anti-masking dress code of the restaurant wasn’t posted outside the establishment.
The restaurant owner also believes that “the overall reaction with masks is ridiculous in the United States right now.”
Tom said that he and his employees will continue to implement the anti-mask rule and will notify people going inside the restaurant to ditch the masks. He also said that he did not know that the Westers’ son was immunocompromised.
