A man and woman were found dead after a fatal shooting incident at the lobby of Marriott Marquis Houston Hotel in downtown Houston on Tuesday, police said.
According to witnesses cited by media reports, the man fatally shot the woman and then turned the gun on himself in the lobby of the hotel.
The Houston Police Department said the incident happened at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon at the Marriott Marquis Houston. Police arrived at the scene “within minutes” where they found the two dead bodies in the hotel lobby, NBC News reported.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said that the two people appeared to have some sort of relationship and the incident was not just a random act. Although it is still not clear how the two are related to each other.
“The investigation is going to determine exactly what relationship it is,” Finner told reporters. “But as I always say, this is tragic. We’ve got apparently two families affected here.”
The man and woman arrived at the hotel in different vehicles then met in the lobby. Police said that the man and the woman were about to check into the hotel because they both entered the premise with suitcases.
The victims were having a conversation at the lobby when the man brought out a gun, shot the woman, and immediately shot himself too, Finner said.
According to reports, witnesses didn’t notice any argument between the man and the woman before hearing the gunshots.
HPD officers are still trying to interview witnesses in order to identify the man and the woman and be able to notify both families. Initial reports say that the woman, Caucasian, was in her late 20s and the man, African-American, was in his late 30s.
No one else was injured and the hotel continues its operation and still accepting guests.
