Grab your tissues, it’s spring pollen season in the Hill Country! You may have seen yellow dust coating everything outside, that is pollen. Spring is a common time for allergies as trees, grass, and flowers are producing pollen and bursting it through the air. In Texas, the biggest pollen producer is oak trees.
Spring pollen causes more than 50 million Americans to suffer from allergies. Allergies are caused by pollen attaching to the body and releasing chemicals, among those chemicals are histamines. Histamines attach to receptor sites and cause different allergy symptoms to form. Symptoms of pollen allergies include sneezing, wheezing, coughing, nasal congestion, watery or itchy eyes, and an itchy throat. Spring pollen allergies are often called “hay fever”.
If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you may be able to find some relief after visiting your local physician. They can prescribe allergy drops and other allergy-fighting medicine to help combat your allergies.
If going to see a doctor isn’t an option, you can try these remedies at home. They aren’t guaranteed to work but they are natural options.
Staying indoors when the pollen count is high could help reduce your reaction. If going outside is a must, you can try wearing a mask. It is also recommended to wash your hair and change your clothes at night, before bedtime. Pollen gets trapped in hair, hair products, and clothing throughout the day. Pollen will also stick inside your nose throughout the day, using a saline nasal spray will help clear out your nasal passages.
Pollen season can last anywhere from the end of winter until early fall so prepare yourself for the long season if you are prone to having pollen allergies.
