LAREDO, TX- A human smuggling attempt was foiled near Laredo on Friday, November 9 after Border Patrol agents discovered 81 illegal immigrants hiding in a refrigerated trailer.
Fox San Antonio writes that the illegal immigrants were found at the IH-35 North checkpoint in Laredo. Border Patrol agents said that one person was visible when they first spotted the red tractor pulling a white refrigerated trailer.
Upon investigation, authorities were able to determine that the tractor’s license plate was stolen. A service canine was deployed and alerted agents to the smell of concealed humans and/or narcotics.
The individuals were found locked in the trailer with a fictitious seal.
Border Patrol agents reported that 67 of the 81 were male and 13 of them were female. One juvenile was among the illegal immigrants.
They were found to be from the countries of Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Brazil, and Nicaragua.
The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested along with the illegal immigrants.
