Homicide Suspect Mistakenly Freed from Jail Involve in Another Killing

On Nov. 29, David A. Johnson III, 20, of Columbus, was released from the Franklin County Jail due to an unintentional filing error made by a county court employee. On Dec. 13, Johnson participated in an attempted robbery with two other people and killed a man, age 21, with a gun.

Habitual Offender

After the error was discovered, Johnson’s lawyer set him up to turn himself in, but he never did. Instead, according to authorities, Johnson joined two others in an attempted robbery at a gas station in Columbus that resulted in the shooting death of a 21-year-old man. After that, Johnson eluded capture until he was apprehended on Monday night.

In an April 2021 shooting in Columbus that wounded his mother and claimed the life of a 26-year-old man, Johnson was initially charged with murder and other offenses. Later that year, he was put under house arrest, but a judge recently lifted it after Johnson was implicated and imprisoned in the death of his 1-year-old son.

Johnson was initially charged with drug possession and endangering a child; later, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter. According to authorities, the boy died after ingesting drugs while in Johnson’s care, a source posted.

Johnson’s initial charges in municipal court were subject to a motion filed on Nov. 29 to have them dismissed, and county prosecutors intended to seek an indictment there. Robbery to Murder

Early morning on Dec. 13, Andrew Combs, 21, who had stopped an attempted robbery at a gas station in the Hilltop, was shot and killed, although there only appeared to be one shooter. Paramedics took him to Grant Medical Center, where he passed away at 12:56 in the morning.

Detectives think David Johnson III is one of three suspects, according to a search warrant affidavit that 10TV obtained. Johnson. Last week, the police issued an arrest warrant for Johnson and Caiden Allen, 18, about the shooting death of Combs. The men are both accused of murder.
