TEXAS – Thursday evening the Texas Country recording superstar, Granger Smith, announced on social media that his youngest son passed away due to an unfortunate accident.
The post did not state exactly in detail what happened in the accident, but it did reflect that despite the doctor’s best efforts, his 3-year-old son, River Kelly Smith, was unable to be saved.
Smith shared this statement Thursday:
“I have to deliver unthinkable news. We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite the doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived. Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father. Riv was special. Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts. If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment. Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this.”
Smith’s wife, Amber, also announced the news on her media accounts, along with a picture of her holding River, who had just celebrated his third birthday in May.
Thursday afternoon, representatives for Smith did confirm that the cause of his son’s death was by drowning in a pool located at their home.
Smith and his wife said goodbye and decided to donate River’s organs to other children, giving them the chance to experience life.
The family is requesting in lieu of gifts or flowers, donations be sent to Dell Children’s Medical Center in their son’s name.
