SWAT situation, police asking people to avoid the area

AUSTIN – A little after 9 a.m. Monday morning, the Austin Police Department received a call to perform a welfare check at a residence in the 6200 block of Haney Drive, near Gaston and North Hampton.

According to police, the caller stated they believed the person in the residence was allegedly armed and potentially violent.

Due to the situation and close proximity, Austin ISD Police Chief Ashley Gonzalez states that Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy and Harris Elementary have been placed on lockout. Precautionary procedures are in place due to the increased police activity in the area.

Police are also asking motorist and pedestrians to avoid the area at this time.

The situation is still currently ongoing, and updates will be made when more information becomes available.
