MATHIS – Police in Mathis reported that a 10-week-old baby is on life support after her father allegedly beat her on Monday.
When EMS were called to the residence located at the Mariposa Gardens apartment in Mathis at approximately 5:00 p.m. on May 7, it was first reported to them that the child was having trouble breathing, said MPD.
Officials added that the baby had no outward appearance of any injuries but once at the hospital, an x-ray was performed and it was discovered that the child had eight fractured ribs, which included five posterior ribs on the left side and three posterior fractured ribs on the right side of her body. In addition to her rib injuries, authorities said that x-rays showed bleeding around the 10-week-old’s brain.
The Mathis Police Department reportedly responded to a call at the Driscoll Children’s Hospital where they learned about the infant and her injuries.
An arrest affidavit stated that Leonard Ruiz Echavarrie confessed to injuring the child, saying that it was an accident caused by him panicking when he believed she wasn’t breathing.
The infant was still on life support on Tuesday, stated police.
An investigation of the incident is currently underway.
