DALLAS – One suspect has been arrested following the investigation of a hate crime caught on tape of an assault to a transgender female victim by several suspects, according to the Dallas Police Department.
Officers reportedly responded to an injured person call at a Dallas hospital on April 12 at approximately 11:23 p.m.
It was learned by officials that the victim was involved in a minor traffic accident at Royal Crest Apartments, 3558 Wilhurt Avenue, on April 12 between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. As a result of the accident, a verbal altercation between the victim and a male suspect began.
During the altercation, authorities said the male started to physically assault the victim before several other suspects joined in the assault.
A video of the assault posted to Facebook by user Taj Mahal has surfaced on social media. In the video, which is shown below, a group of people can be seen surrounding the victim and assaulting her.
A witness at the scene transported the woman to UT Southwestern after she sustained serious bodily injury.
With the help of tips and other assistance with the case, Dallas police detectives arrested Edward Thomas, 29 on April 14 at around 9:30 p.m. for his alleged role in the aggravated assault.
Police have flagged this case as a hate crime.
