CORPUS CHRISTI – The Kleberg County Sheriff’s Department has come forward to announce that the body the Corpus Christi Police Department discovered near Bob Hall Pier was that of King High School senior Je’Sani Smith.
Police responded to a call at around 4:30 p.m. about a body being found near Mile Marker 271, stated Senior Officer Gena Pena on Sunday.
Authorities reported that a man by the name of Patrick Reyes was fishing with friends when he saw something in distance. Upon investigating, Reyes discovered the 18-year-old’s body and he and his friends pulled him to shore and called the police.
It is believed that on Thursday, Smith was caught in a riptide while swimming with two other teenagers about 15- to 200 yards from the shore near White Cap Beach.
The two teenagers with Smith were both rescued or made it back to the shore, however, after a search by the U.S. Coast Guard and other organizations, Smith remained a missing person until Sunday.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family’s unexpected expenses due to this tragedy.
