AMARILLO – Distracted driving is believed to be a cause of the fatal vehicle accident that left a man dead after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into two trees, reported the Amarillo Police Department.
APD said their officers responded to a crash in the 3300 block of South Soncy Road on Tuesday, April 9 at approximately 5:11 p.m. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a 2006 Range Rover on its side against a tree.
Police detialed that the driver, identified as Amarillo resident Martin Kenneth Smith, 61, had been driving southbound on Soncy in the right lane when he lost control of his vehicle, struck a curb, rolled on its side, struck and tree, then struck a second tree.
Smith was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.
APD said that speed and driver distraction were factors in this collision.
“APD would like to remind everyone that there are laws in place that prohibit reading, writing, and sending electronic messages while driving. These laws are in place to protect you as well as other drivers on our roadways,” said APD. “Too often we see drivers swerving and causing, or almost causing an accident for nothing more than reading or sending a text message. This practice has got to stop. That message is not more important than your life or another innocent life on our roadway.”
The crash is currently being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
