CORPUS CHRISTI – A mother was sentenced to six years in prison following her attempt to pay off drug money by selling her 7-year-old son for $2,500, reported authorities.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times stated that Esmeralda Barron Garza received her sentencing on Friday, April 5 after being arrested in June 2018.
Officials said that after her arrest, Garza told police she needed to get out of drug debt and her solution was to sell her son. She also attempted to sell two of her daughters, ages 2 and 3.
Nueces County court records show that Garza was convicted on three counts of selling or purchasing a child, resulting in a six-year sentence. She was also convicted of conspiracy to sell or purchase a child and money laundering. For that conviction, she received an additional two-year sentence.
105th District Judge Jack Pulcher ruled that Garza is to serve her sentences consecutively.
It is unknown at this time if the children are currently in the custody of Child Protective Services.
