Officer-involved shooting results in two officers on administrative leave

BROWNSVILLE – An officer-involved shooting on Friday, March 1, has led officials to place two Brownsville police officers on administrative leave.

The shooting happened in the 100 block of Clara Bennet Drive. Upon arrival, authorities reported that the two officers, identified as Gonzalo Rubio and Edna Mata, came in contact with Chantal Gasca, 24, who allegedly pointed a pistol at officers as she held a knife.

After officers issued several commands for the woman to drop her pistol, she did not comply which caused Rubio and Mata to discharge their weapons in Gasca’s direction, according to authorities.

Gasca was transported to a local hospital due to her gunshot wounds.

The Brownville Police Department said that the department has standard policies and procedures so any officer involved in a shooting is placed on administrative leave.

The Texas Rangers are currently investigating the case.
