Former President Donald Trump has again started making statements saying that Democrats cheated their way during the 2020 presidential election and that the United States, under President Joe Biden, “will not survive.”
An Opinion On Trump’s Statements
Following Trump’s statement about the U.S. “not surviving,” Brian Stelter, in an opinion piece, through CNN Business, said that he watched Trump’s entire interview with “One America News” propagandist Dan Ball.
Stelter said that when Trump talked about the United States not surviving, it was what stood out the most to him. “Trump was in the middle of a fact-free rant about ‘vicious’ Democrats cheating on elections when he said ‘they’re destroying our country. Our country will not survive this. Our country will not survive,’” he said.
Stelter believes that Trump’s recent statements are signs of a “gathering storm.” He said that news outlets should provide warnings regarding the statements of Trump, but some are ignoring the threat from such statements. Stelter added that historian and “On Tyranny” author Timothy Snyder told him that the right-wing media is a giant safe space for the Big Lie, although there are few honorable exceptions, that is why reality-based press need to make “democracy the story.”
Snyder further told Stelter that the GOP is actively working to overthrow the future elections through laws, regulations, and propaganda efforts. With these, it is possible that a “presidential loser could be cast as the winner in 2024.”
“That is what’s happening right before our eyes right now, and we’re just too cowardly to look at it,” he added.
Another Writer Opines ‘Do Not Look Away’
In another opinion, this time by Steve Benen through MSNBC, he cited many conservatives instilling fear in American citizens.
Benen talked about the opinion editorial piece of Robert Kagan last week that says in part, “The United States is heading into its greatest political and constitutional crisis since the Civil War, with a reasonable chance over the next three to four years of incidents of mass violence, a breakdown of federal authority, and the division of the country into warring red and blue enclaves.” Another was by Rick Hasen, one of the nation’s leading election-law scholars, who told Politico last week that he is more frightened now about American democracy.
Benen believes Trump used this backdrop to make his recent statements to pour fuel on the fire. Because of this, Benen noted, “When a former American president — who may yet run again and who continues to lead a major political party — tells a national audience that the United States ‘will not survive’ because of election crimes that exist only in his mind, I’m not inclined to look away.”
