In the 2020 presidential election, a major campaign promise of President Joe Biden was unifying the country. It was also the prevalent theme during his inaugural address. But in a poll released Sunday by Fox News, it was revealed that most American voters now think that the U.S. became less united since he took office in January.
Interestingly, Fox News has often been accused of providing biased reporting in favor of conservative political positions, the Republican Party and former President Donald Trump.
In his Jan. 20 inaugural speech, Biden said, “We can join forces, stop the shouting and lower the temperature. For without unity there is no peace, only bitterness, and fury. No progress, only exhausting outrage. No nation, only a state of chaos. This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge, and unity is the path forward.” But Americans think otherwise.
In the recent Fox News poll, 54% of respondents said they believe that the country is less united while just 37% said it is more united.
The survey found that 47% believe that Biden does not care “about people like you,” a 6% increase from the last survey in June and October.
When asked in the poll if Biden is a strong leader, 53% of voters disagreed, 45% agreed. With the same question asked last August, voters tied at 47%.
Meanwhile, when asked if Biden has the “mental soundness” to serve as the U.S. president, American voters were divided with 49% saying yes, and 48% saying he doesn’t have mental soundness to serve the country.
The statistic percentage of respondents saying yes has changed quite a bit since the question was asked last July of 2020, but the number of people saying no rose from 39% over the previous year.
The recent poll reveals that Biden’s approval rating is rising. From 43% in April, it went up to 49% in the recent poll. At least 50% also approve of the job that the president is doing.
President Biden also received his highest mark with regards to how he is handling the coronavirus pandemic. At least 55% approved and only 44% disapproved of his response to the pandemic.
On the economic side, responders were divided. At least 50% in the poll approved of his performance while 49% disapproved. But Biden’s ratings on how he handled the Afghanistan crisis are at a very low rate. At least 60% disapproved of his handling of the crisis while only 36% approved.
When respondents were asked what concerns them the most, 82% said the inflation and higher prices while 74% said the COVID-19 pandemic. 73% said they are most concerned about the Afghanistan situation while 72% said unemployment. There were 72% who said they are concerned about Islamic and domestic terrorists in the U.S. while 63% said climate change.
At least 62% said abortion policies are what they are most affected of while 59% said illegal immigration. 50% said crime in their neighborhoods.
The survey polled 1,002 registered voters and was conducted between Sept. 12 – 15. The survey has a plus/minus 3 percentage points margin of error.
