What Happened to Him?

Just a few days after disclosing that he had an incurable type of leukemia, Rochdale MP Sir Tony Lloyd passed away “surrounded by his family.” The Rochdale Member of Parliament, who was initially elected in 1983 and has served the seat since 2017, was undergoing treatment for a kind of blood cancer.

On Wednesday, January 17, his family reported that he passed away “peacefully” at home in the company of his loved ones. His family said: “We are deeply saddened to share the news of Sir Tony Lloyd MP’s passing. He was our cherished ‘Joe, Dad, and Granddad.'”

“He died peacefully this morning surrounded by his family, as was his wish.”His love was assisting others; therefore, he continued to work until a few days before he passed away.”Serving others and improving their lives—including those of his constituents, coworkers, friends, and family—was his life’s work.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the blood and platelet donors who gave him an additional four years of life, as well as the committed physicians, nurses, healthcare assistants, and other hospital staff who have provided him care.”

Sir Tony Lloyd, Who Was He?

On Thursday, January 11, Sir Tony, a member of parliament representing Rochdale since 2017, said that he had received a diagnosis of a kind of blood cancer that is “untreatable.”

Following Sir Tony’s passing, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer praised his “desire to make the world a better, fairer place.”

“It is a great sorrow that Sir Tony Lloyd passed away today. “It is with deepest condolences that I, along with the entire Labour Party and many others outside of it, offer to Tony’s wife, Judith, his children, Siobhan, Angharad, Kieron, and Ali, as well as his granddaughters, Carmen and Carys,” Sir Keir said.

Like them, we shall cherish his decency and unwavering adherence to Labour principles. We will always appreciate his commitment to public service, love for his nation, and desire for a more just and equitable world.

“We at the Labour Party will uphold his legacy of altruism and dedication to justice. I hope he finds peace. From 2006 to 2010, Sir Tony, who had previously represented the seats of Manchester Central and Stretford, presided over the parliamentary Labour Party.

During part of Sir Tony Blair’s first term in government, he served as a junior minister. He had vital opposition roles under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, such as housing minister and shadow secretary of state for Northern Ireland. He was hospitalized in critical care in 2020 as a result of Covid-19.

Early in January, Sir Tony revealed he had an incurable blood cancer and that he would be “spending the time he had left with his family.”

Statement:

“I have been receiving treatment for a form of blood cancer which has been controlled by chemotherapy,” he stated in a statement. Sadly, this has now developed into an aggressive and incurable type of leukemia, and I will be spending my remaining days with my family instead of being in the hospital.

The Labour Party is beholden to Tony for his lifetime of service, and he is liked and respected throughout. We are now thinking of him and his family. “I request privacy for my family and myself at this time.”
