In a final push to clear remaining stock, a discount sale is currently underway at the Jersey City, New Jersey, Sears store, with prices slashed by up to 70%. The discounts apply to various items, including tools and clothes, with reductions of up to 40% and 50%. This marks a significant development as the pending closure of the Jersey City location looms just 14 months after the department store chain emerged from bankruptcy. Once boasting around 700 stores at its peak, Sears has faced a series of closures, leaving only a dozen stores open across the United States.
The impending shutdown has evoked mixed reactions from shoppers who are both devastated and bewildered by the news. Expressing disappointment, one shopper online lamented, “Another bites the dust.” The sentiment echoed among patrons is one of disbelief, with some questioning the decision to close a store located in what they consider a prime spot. “Why, it’s an iconic store, it makes no sense to close it. It’s in a good location,” remarked one shopper, reflecting the sentiments of many who feel a sense of loss. Another shopper shared, “My son is obsessed with Sears, and he is heartbroken,” underlining the emotional connection that patrons have developed with the store over the years.
The store’s Facebook account has become a platform for shoppers to share their sentiments, with some expressing sadness at the sight of the store appearing barren in pictures posted online. Amid the disappointment, loyal customers have vowed to visit the store before it closes its doors for the last time. One customer, eager to make the most of the remaining days, inquired about the last day of operation, stating, “When’s the last day? This accelerates my travel plans.”
As the Jersey City store faces closure, it leaves only 11 other Sears outlets still operating, with four located in California, three in Florida, and two each in Washington, Texas, and Massachusetts. Additionally, Sears maintains a presence in Mexico and Puerto Rico. The company had previously announced plans to close over 70 stores as part of its restructuring strategy in May 2022. Between 2018 and 2022, hundreds of Sears outlets shuttered permanently as the chain battled for survival. By the time the company emerged from bankruptcy in October 2022, only 22 stores remained.
Despite these challenges, retail expert Ray Wimer anticipates a slow demise for the iconic chain founded in 1892, emphasizing the lack of a compelling value proposition and stiff competition in the retail marketplace. The closure date for the New Jersey Sears store remains undisclosed, and efforts to obtain a comment from Sears are ongoing.
