Texas Starts Transporting Migrants by Air from US-Mexico Border to Chicago; First Flight Carrying 120 People

As Texas Takes 91 Private Plane Migrants to Chicago:

For the first time, the state of Texas employed a private aircraft to transport migrants from the state to Chicago on Tuesday night, when at least 91 migrants were flown to the city. This was done by Texas disaster management officials. The departure also suggests that Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott is intensifying his attempts to undermine President Joe Biden’s reelection prospects and polarize Democratic voters. The governor of Texas confirmed through a spokesman that the state had deployed the aircraft to Chicago and that further flights are scheduled.

Abbott was trying to “create chaos throughout the entire country,” according to Mayor Brandon Johnson, who spoke with WTTW News’ “Chicago Tonight: Black Voices.” Johnson said that Chicago had been singled out.

Tuesday about 7:15 p.m., the aircraft carrying migrants who entered the nation illegally at the southern border and sought refuge due to political unrest and economic collapse touched down at O’Hare International Airport. 150 individuals were initially on the plane, according to Johnson’s office, but that number was changed on Wednesday afternoon.

Airport staff contacted the Chicago Police Department following the plane’s unexpected landing, as reported by WTTW News. As stated in the police incident file, the plane’s tail number is associated with the Texas Division of Emergency Management. The aircraft started in El Paso, Texas. Before detectives could interview them, the police claim that two people who were identified in the police record as “handlers” got off the plane and “leaped into an Uber.” The migrants are presently staying at O’Hare, according to the officials. Right now, O’Hare is home to about 300 individuals.

Abbott’s spokeswoman claimed WTTW News that 120 passengers were aboard the trip, calling it the “first” to arrive in Chicago. This announcement coincided with Chicago authorities clamping down on busses that don’t follow municipal ordinances mandating travelers to be dropped off at certain locations.

“We’re expanding our operation to include flights to Chicago because Mayor Johnson is not abiding by his city’s ‘Welcoming City’ ordinance by targeting migrant buses from Texas,” Press Secretary Andrew Mahaleris stated. Because of a recent city rule, authorities have the authority to seize buses carrying passengers who leave the premises after hours or without a permit. A $3,000 fine, in addition to towing and storage costs, may be imposed on violators. Abbott was charged with “raggedy behavior” by Johnson for employing busses that have attempted to drop off refugees in the dark of the night with nowhere to go, and Johnson claimed that Abbott was intent to “circumvent” that rule.

Chicago officials are not required under the Welcoming City legislation to provide for immigrants’ needs in Chicago using public cash. Not one of the migrants is covered by the ordinance since it focuses on safeguards for unauthorized employees. Officials from Texas funded three of the buses that came in Chicago on Tuesday, and they anticipate five more to come on Wednesday.

A Chicago Department of Law statement states that the driver of a bus that was seized on December 13 did not have a license to transport passengers.According to official data, there are about two dozen women and children sleeping in police stations throughout the city, and there are about 14,100 migrants in local shelters. The five-year-old Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero’s death at a Pilsen shelter, according to Johnson, “was breaking all of our hearts.”

According to Johnson, Abbott was held responsible for the boy’s still-unexplained death by city officials, who are trying to guarantee that all of the refugees have a safe and respectable place to reside. He said that a lot of immigrants arrive in Chicago terrified and ill.

Johnson’s first months in office saw a sharp increase in the number of migrants transferred to Chicago, outpacing the city’s capacity to care for them, shattering the social safety net of the city and deepening the already existing tensions amongst Black, Latino, and Asian residents. According to city records, since August 2022, 607 busses have arrived in Chicago, transporting about 26,100 individuals, almost all of them are refugees from political unrest and economic collapse in Central and South America.
