A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that resulted in the tragic death of a pregnant preschool teacher, April Zoglauer, 21, in San Jose. She was struck by a stolen Hyundai while 27 weeks pregnant, leading to an emergency C-section. April succumbed to her injuries, and her premature baby, Devontae Aaron Zoglauer, passed away the following day.
The driver responsible for the incident, along with two other occupants of the car, is still at large. A memorial has been established at the Play ‘N’ Learn Preschool, where April worked. She began her journey there as a teenager, volunteering to assist with classes, and offering support to teachers. Known for her ability to comfort children adapting to school life without parental presence, April was an invaluable presence.
School director Tammy Lariz praised her unique talent, saying, “I’ve never had somebody else who could do that job, not the way she could do it. She was a blessing… She meant everything to us.” Friends and family remember April’s excitement about her future, her impending motherhood, and her planned trip to Hawaii. Her colleagues at Play ‘N’ Learn had witnessed her growth from her teenage years and often inquired about her pregnancy.
In her honor, Lariz initiated a GoFundMe campaign in the names of April and her baby son, Devontae. She expressed, “He was loved fiercely during his brief time here on earth and will be deeply missed.” As of Monday, the GoFundMe has exceeded its $20,000 goal, providing financial support for the family to cover funeral expenses and medical bills.
