Texans are allowed to purchase as many qualifying items as they want, such as household batteries, fuel containers, flashlights, hurricane shutters, emergency ladders, and portable generators.
Comptroller Glenn Hegar emphasized that it’s important to prepare for emergencies beforehand. “He stated that even though it is impossible to predict when the next natural disaster will occur, it is crucial to ensure that our families, homes, and businesses are equipped with the necessary supplies to prepare for any emergency.”
Philip Klotzbach with the Tropical Weather & Climate Research Department at Colorado State University forecasts a slightly below-normal hurricane season, but officials remind residents that even just one storm can be catastrophic.

Comptroller’s Office Reminder
The Comptroller’s Office cautions those making purchases online to consider delivery, shipping, handling, and transportation charges when determining whether an emergency preparation supply can be purchased tax-free during the holiday. If the total sales price of a qualifying item is more than the set price limit, tax is due on the total sales price, including delivery charges.
Qualifying items do not include batteries for automobiles, boats, and other motorized vehicles, camping stoves and supplies, chainsaws, plywood, extension ladders, stepladders, and tents. A complete list of eligible emergency preparation supplies can be found on the Comptroller’s website.
Overall, Texans can save money with the upcoming sales tax holiday for emergency supplies on April 22-24. Comptroller Hegar hopes that the tax holiday will help Texans save money while stocking up on necessary supplies.
