IRS News Release: Free File with IRS

The IRS News Release reminded low- to moderate-income taxpayers to consider IRS Free File. The news was released on April 13. This is to prepare for their own federal tax return to potentially receive overlooked tax credits or tax refunds.

In the IRS news release, qualified individuals can file electronically and get a refund by direct deposit through the IRS Free File. This is a public-private collaboration between the IRS and some tax preparation software companies, Bloomberg reported.

The IRS Free File offers taxpayers two ways to prepare and file their federal income tax online for free. This includes the Guided Tax Preparation and the Free File Fillable Forms.

Taxpayers whose Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is $73,000 should use the Guided Tax Preparation while taxpayers whose AGI is greater than $73,000 should use the Free File Fillable Forms.

The IRS encourages the following to consider taking advantage of the IRS Free File:

  • low- to moderate-income workers
  • working families who don’t usually file a tax return
  • people who are experiencing homelessness
  • students who just entered the workforce or who may have only worked part-time
  • parents of qualifying children who are born or welcomed through foster care or adoption in 2022
