DPS said the suspect did have a gun and shot toward deputies, who returned fire. It was unclear if the suspect was hit, officials said
SUNNYVALE, Texas — A man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle, leading officers on a pursuit in parts of Dallas and Kaufman counties, then shot towards DPS troopers has been arrested, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WFAA.
The incident began with a chase that started just after 6 p.m. Thursday in Terrell. The car was reported stolen out of Carrollton, KCSO officials said. Law enforcement had deployed spikes to stop the pursuit, but the suspect continued driving. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the suspect crashed the car and fled the scene on foot. According to officials, there were two people, including the suspect who has been identified as 20-year-old Omar Robledo, in the vehicle at the time.
DPS said Robledo did have a gun and shot toward authorities, who returned fire. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office said no deputies or arrestees were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Robledo was believed to be contained to a wooded area off U.S. Highway 80 and Parkview Drive on Friday morning. The Sunnyvale Police Department arrested Robledo on Friday morning. The passenger, identified as 20-year-old Alejandro Honorato-Calderon, was also taken into custody on Thursday evening.
The Town of Sunnyvale asked residents living in the Meadowlake Subdivision area of Jobson Road and the north service road U.S. 80 to shelter in place and lock their doors until otherwise notified. Sunnyvale police lifted the shelter-in-place Friday morning.
Around 6 a.m. on Friday, the Sunnyvale Independent School District announced that classes would be delayed by about two hours due to “the fugitive situation in the town.” In an update just before 9 a.m., the district said classes would be canceled.
“We feel that it is prudent to keep our Raiders home today and will be canceling school as a measure of caution and safety,” the district said.
Robledo was charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, Evading Arrest or Detention, and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Public Servant. Honorato-Calderon was charged with Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 1B >1g<4g and Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 4>200g<400.
