Man Shot by Jeffersonville Police Dies from Injuries
A man who was shot by Jeffersonville police in southern Indiana died from his injuries several days after the incident.
Robert William Atkins, 44, was shot by officers who were responding to a 911 call about an armed man walking around an apartment complex. According to Fox News, the police said that Atkins fired a handgun and pointed it at the officers, prompting them to fire their weapons in response. Atkins was rushed to a hospital in Louisville, where he died on Sunday afternoon.

Clark Memorial Health, the hospital where the victim was taken released a statement following the death of Atkins. The victim of the Jeffersonville police had requested a mental health evaluation and was taken to Clark Memorial Health by EMS the day before the shooting.
According to News and Tribune, Clark Memorial Health expressed deep sadness over the shooting and extended condolences to Atkins’ family. The hospital stated that it is committed to providing high-quality, safe, and compassionate care to every individual who enters its facilities. However, the hospital cannot discuss the specifics of any patient treated at its hospital due to patient privacy laws.
The incident involving Atkins and the Jeffersonville police is currently under investigation by local and state authorities, and body camera footage of the shooting will be made public in the future.
The Indiana State Police are investigating the incident, and it remains unclear whether the Jeffersonville police who shot Atkins acted appropriately.
