The additional $6.5 million in funding for the State of Maine energy assistance, provides much-needed relief for low-income renters and homeowners who are struggling to pay their energy bills. The funding was secured by Senator Susan Collins, Senator Jack Reed, and Congressman Jared Reed as part of the 2023 government funding bill.

Those who fall under the low-income category and have a total household income falling at 150% of the federal poverty level or 60% of the state are eligible for assistance. Applicants can also qualify for additional help if they have less than a three-day supply of heating fuel or are in danger of having their utility services disconnected.

With many Northeast residents seeing a drastic increase in their utility bills this winter, the additional funding comes at a crucial time. Residential electricity prices in some states have risen by over 60%, propane by as much as 40%, and natural gas by nearly 30%. This situation puts vulnerable Mainers, particularly low-income families, seniors, and in a difficult situation, with many forced to choose between paying for heat and paying for food or medicine.

Application Process

The LIHEAP program can provide up to $500 in assistance to eligible residents. The application process varies depending on the county, but there are some mandatory documents that all applicants must provide, according to a published article in The U.S Sun, such as names and Social Security numbers of everyone living in the household, proof of gross household income for the last 30 days or 12 months, proof of present address, and recent copies of energy and utility bills.
