$60 Million Phone Settlement: Check Your Plan Type to See if You Qualify

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced last week that $7 million in settlement funds remains to be claimed by customers of AT&T. The funds are a result of a settlement reached in 2019, in which the FTC ordered AT&T to pay $60 million back to customers for allegedly misleading them about the company’s unlimited data plans.

According to the FTC, AT&T failed to inform customers that their unlimited data plans would be subject to “throttling,” or a reduction in internet speeds, once a certain amount of data had been used. This throttling, the FTC said, would occur even if customers were still within their billing cycle and had not exceeded their monthly data limit.

As part of the settlement, AT&T agreed to pay $60 million to customers who had been affected by the throttling. However, the FTC has now announced that a significant portion of these funds remains unclaimed.

Who qualifies for the refund?

To check if you are eligible for a payment under the settlement, you will need to check the phone number and plan associated with the account. You can submit a claim form online through the FTC. You can also contact the claims administrator by calling 1-877-654-1982 or emailing [email protected].

The deadline to file a claim is on May 18, 2023.

How much will you get?

If you are eligible for a payment, the exact amount you’ll get back from AT&T depends on how many customers come along and file a claim. Customers in the initial round of refunds earned back between $10 and $23, depending on the state where they live.

It’s worth noting that the settlement is still pending court approval, but once it is approved, customers who were affected by AT&T’s throttling practices will have the opportunity to claim a portion of the $7 million in remaining settlement funds. It’s important to stay informed and check your phone number and plan to see if you qualify.
