Texas has joined California as the only two states with a population with over more than 30 million people.
As of July 1, 2022, Lone Star State’s population is estimated at 30,029,572. The Census Bureau has yet to release the new 2022 estimates for counties and cities.
With more than 2.2 million residents, data from 2021 show Houston remains the largest city in the state by far, while San Antonio and Dallas have 1.4 million and 1.2 million residents respectively, and Austin and Fort Worth round out the top five, with more than 900,000 residents.
Between July 1, 2021, and the same date in 2022, the new estimates show Texas added almost 475,000 new residents. That’s way more than any other state in the U.S.
With more than 400,000 Florida’s population also grew, while North Carolina and Georgia both added more than 100,000 residents.
32 states and the District of Columbia saw an increase in population in total, while 18 states and Puerto Rico saw a decline in population.
On the record, New York lost more than 180,000 residents, while the populations of California and Illinois dropped by more than 100,000.
Texas will surpass 40 million residents by 2049, and reach around 44.4 million in 2060 if migration continues at the same rate seen from 2010 to 2020. Half the rate seen between 2010 and 2020, the state’s population will reach 36.7 million in 2060 if migration is slower.
