In a tirade against Governor Greg Abbott on Thursday, former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon blasted the Texas Republican for transporting migrants to Washington, D.C., in subzero conditions on Christmas Eve.
Abott Faces Pressure
In recent months, Abbott has come under fire for the Lone Star State’s policy of sending illegal immigrants and asylum applicants to Democrat-run communities. Liberals have long decried the action as a “cruel” piece of political theater, but some members of the governor’s own party are also criticizing him.
In a post on the right-wing social media platform Gettr on Thursday, Bannon, a steadfast supporter of the late President Donald Trump, attacked Abbott.
“Abbott has to stop busing illegal aliens into the interior of America and start sending them BACK to the interior of Mexico,” Bannon tweeted.
After migrants were left outside Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris’ house on Christmas Eve, critics of Abbott slammed him over the weekend. In a harsh statement over the busing, the White House said that Abbott had “left youngsters by the side of the road in below-freezing weather.”
White House spokesman: “These political games accomplish nothing and only put lives in danger. As we have repeatedly stated, we are willing to work with anyone—Republican or Democrat alike—on real solutions, like the comprehensive immigration reform and border security measures President Biden sent to Congress on his first day in office.
Abbott tweeted a Christmas greeting to his social media fans on December 25. However, the tweet drew criticism since several people accused him of pulling the prior day’s bus stunt.
Convicted Two Counts Of Contempt
According to earlier reports, Bannon, who was a top strategist for former President Donald Trump in 2017, was found guilty on Friday of two counts of contempt of Congress for defying summonses issued by the House committee looking into the Capitol incident on January 6, 2021.
After nearly three hours of deliberation, a federal jury returned a guilty verdict, according to CNN. On October 21, he will be sentenced, and he might spend as little as 30 days in jail or as much as a year. Bannon may also be subject to a punishment ranging from $100 to $100,000 and is anticipated to fight the decision.
According to Reuters, the conviction may harm Trump by giving the House committee more justification for requesting papers and testimony from other members of his inner circle. Others could be discouraged from disobeying the panel’s subpoenas in the future as a result of the conviction and the jail time and fines that come with it.
