U.S. Senator Ted Cruz criticized former President Donald Trump for saying that the United States Constitution should be terminated in order to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Cruz framed the comment as an overly sensationalized distraction while still condemning Trump’s suggestion. After being prompted by reporters, the Republican from Texas made his comments three days after Trump’s original comment on the subject.
Repudiating Trump’s Post in Truth Social
Cruz, who calls himself a “constitutionalist” and takes great pride in having memorized the Constitution as a youth, made the remark after Trump, in a Truth Social post on Saturday, called for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, including those found in the Constitution, in order to rewrite the 2020 election, KSAT.com reported.
Trump’s post was a significant escalation of his conspiracy theory that the election was stolen from him in favor of current President Joe Biden.
Trump’s Saturday statement was the first time he openly advocated for the overturning of the country’s legal backbone, despite his constant claims that he never lost the election.
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican in the Senate, criticized Trump’s comments, calling them irresponsible. Cornyn said Trump’s chances of being the Republican nominee in 2024 could be damaged by the Truth Social post.
When asked about the Truth Social posts, Cruz avoided directly attacking Trump and instead emphasized the authority of the Constitution.
“The constitution is enduring and it will endure for millennia,” Cruz said, as quoted in the report.
Cheated Out of “Reelection”
Trump has long held the belief that he was cheated out of reelection through fraudulent means. When he launched his return campaign for 2024 on Nov. 15, he reiterated this statement, despite the fact that no court or state election authority has confirmed the existence of widespread fraud.
“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!” Trump said, as quoted by the Dallas Morning News.
In the report, Trump believes that he lost the presidential position due to the fraudulent acts of big tech companies and the Democrat party.
Changing the rules or suspending the constitution after losing an election are hallmarks of autocracy, as pointed out by Democrats and legal experts.
