Sons of Anarchy may have had a prequel series focusing on the First 9, the club’s founding members, but it never happened. Sons of Anarchy gave way to a spinoff series titled Mayans M.C, but that wasn’t the only project planned for this universe. There were negotiations for a prequel series, but it doesn’t appear to be happening anymore – here’s why. Sons of Anarchy, created by Kurt Sutter, began on FX in 2008 and was highly welcomed by reviewers and audiences, allowing the series to continue for a total of seven seasons, ending in 2014.
Showrunner Sutter’s Relationship With Disney Has Failed:
Sutter was sacked from FX in October 2019 following numerous accusations about his behavior and departed the showrunner. As a result, Sutter’s relationship with Disney is strained, and he has put his other projects from the Sons of Anarchy universe on hold. Sutter told Deadline shortly after leaving the Mouse House that the prospect of making The First nine a reality “doesn’t look that hopeful” now because the studio owns Sons of Anarchy, and thus he can’t do anything with it. He wants the prequel to be a limited series, with four movies recounting the tale of the club from John Teller and Piney’s time in Vietnam to the arrival of Clay, the final member of the original crew.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ teased Kurt Sutter’s prequel project by introducing viewers to Jax Teller, aka SAMCRO, in Charming, California. The first season’s events begin when Jax discovers a manifesto written by one of SAMCRO’s founding members, his late father, John Teller. John revealed his plans and visions for the club in the manifesto, which opposed the present president’s position at the time. As the program proceeds, fans learn more about SAMCRO’s founding members.
Kurt Sutter’s Statement About First 9:
During a live discussion with Nerdcore Movement in 2014, Sutter disclosed details regarding The First 9. He claimed that his idea was to make a limited series about SAMCRO’s original members. He also desired to publish John Teller’s work, The Life and Death of Sam Crow. “As we began to think more and more about this prequel on the First 9, I’m thinking more of a one-off like a miniseries, like maybe ten episodes or two 8-episode seasons.” “I felt that releasing that manuscript with his backstory before that aired would bind me too tightly,” Sutter explained.
First 9 and Saw Crow To Be Replaced for Sons of Anarchy:
Sutter explained why he chose not to disclose the text for The Life and Death of Sam Crow, saying he didn’t want to “step on what could conceivably be done with that.” “My idea is now to wait until we finish the prequel and then release it because, at the end of the prequel, we’ll see John Teller start to generate that manuscript or at least the process of commencing the writings,” Sutter stated during a Facebook live. Instead of The First 9, Sutter and his co-creator, Elgin James, chose Mayans MC as the first SOA spinoff. However, before he could refocus on the prequel, Sutter disagreed with his new bosses.

Although viewers are unlikely to see all of the significant events in his life that were referenced during the series, they will be able to see events that led to the construction of the book he wrote.
