Finding the best movies on Netflix can be difficult, but soon you won’t run out of good movies. We’ve updated our 2022 list to highlight some of the underrated brilliance and weed out some of the great films left behind. This is our list of the best movies currently available on Netflix. We highlight the latest releases, Netflix originals, and some of my favourites to stay relevant.
The Gray Man
Packed with familiar names and faces, both on-camera and behind-the-scenes, this thriller features longtime joke and Anthony Russo, the Marvel Cinematic Universe directors, and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have previously worked on Avengers: Infinity War and The Endgame. A CIA assassin is on the run after revealing a dark secret about the agency he works for. Ryan Gosling stars as a police officer pursued by colourful mercenaries and international assassins, including a ruthless killer played by MCU veteran Chris Evans.
Girl in the Picture
This crime documentary tells the story of Sharon Marshall, a young woman who is unspeakably abused by her stepfather, Franklin Floyd. Marshall was found dead on the side of the road in 1990, sparking an investigation into Floyd’s murders. The documentary is based on the surprising twists and turns of what Floyd did. Still, unlike many true-crime documentaries like this one, it’s always focused more on the victim than the perpetrator, so it’s not too heavy-handed.
Hush
A deaf novelist living deep in the woods wants nothing more than to finish a new book, but the mysterious killer has other plans for him in this thriller from Midnight Mass and Oculus director Mike Flanagan. Actress Kate Segal, who has appeared in nearly all of Flanagan’s projects, plays horror writer Maddie Young on the verge of becoming a killer who believes her inability to speak or hear will make her easy prey. Tense and gripping, with clever use of sound and minimal dialogue, Hush offers early hints of the great work one of horror’s most talented filmmakers has to offer.
Nightcrawler
Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a young man who wants to work in the hot world of crime journalism in Los Angeles. After discovering an independent camera crew filming accidents, fires, murders and other mayhem in the city, Lou ventures into this world known as Nightcrawler. Now every police siren equals potential money-making, and Lou begins to see the victims as extra payments. With the help of veteran journalist Nina, Lou becomes involved in the blood sports of local TV news and eventually becomes the protagonist of her own story.
The Irishman
Peggy Sheeran watches her father Frank (Robert De Niro) stand in the doorway, packing his suitcase for a business trip. The pants and the shirt are each neatly folded and put in the luggage. He has a revolver, Frank’s ruthless trading tool. He doesn’t know that his daughter’s eyes are watching him. He is constitutionally silent and retains most of his interactions as an adult. He closes the case. He disappears behind the door. His sentences will last a long time. This scene takes place about a third of the way through Martin Scorsese’s new film, The Irishman, and is about the underworld of Frank’s eponymous mobster. In the final scene, Frank is left old, worn and utterly hopelessly alone. Over time with the family, the bandit loses his friends and sits on a nursing bed. He may be waiting to die, but he’s waiting for Peggy, who doesn’t want to cast him out and forgive his sins.
I Care a Lot
In this dark and satirical thriller, Rosamund Pike portrays an evil con artist who masquerades as a legal guardian to extort assets from the elderly. When his most recent victim is revealed to be the mother of a significant mafia leader, his high-yielding scam takes a risky turn, resulting in a tragic confrontation between Peter Dinklage’s vicious murderer and Pike’s character. Eiza Gonzalez and Dianne Wiest starred in supporting roles in the film, which critics praised, and Pike won a Golden Globe for her performance.
The Mist
The 2007 adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 novel differs in many ways. Notably, this is the first time writer-director Frank Darabont has adapted one of King’s horror stories; The Green Mile combines The Shawshank Redemption into a drama. He is also known as the pioneer of the groundbreaking horror series The Walking Dead, which Darabont made for TV a few years later. Myst and The Walking Dead share several cast members, including Rory Holden, Jeffrey Rare and Melissa McBride, who had small but memorable roles in The Myst in one of her first screen appearances.
