Health experts are unsure if the Lambda variant will cause another outbreak in the same way that the Delta variant of COVID-19 has been not only in Houston but in many parts of the United States.

The first-ever case in Houston was also recently reported after one person from Houston Medical tested positive for the said variant.

Dr. S. Wesley Long, medical director of diagnostic biology at Houston Methodist, said they believe the Lambda variant will not be as transmissible as the Delta variant. Hence, people need to be more focused on the latter. Long added, “Most importantly, regardless of the variant, our best defense against all these variants is vaccination.”

The symptoms of the Lambda variant are not that different from the original COVID-19 strain. People with the said variant could suffer from high fever, continuous cough, and a loss or change in smell and taste.

The Lambda variant was first detected in Peru during the summer of 2020. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that the variant is currently listed as a variant of interest. The UN health agency also noted that the Lambda variant has some mutations that could be resistant to antibodies that are created from the vaccines.
