Every month, HBO adds new movies and television series to its library. Our selections for October 2017 are shown below. Pour a cup of hot tea and watch the new series, specials, and feature premieres. When the current round of titles is added to the streaming service’s database in July, there will be plenty of new episodes and movies to watch on HBO and HBO Max.
Highly expected on HBO October 2017:
Stranger Things’ anticipated second season will release on Netflix in October. Haters Back Off, another Netflix original, will return with fresh episodes this month, while David Fincher’s new series Mindhunter will premiere on the service. Streaming will be valid for Miss Congeniality, The Hateful Eight, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Must Love Dogs, Donnie Darko, and I Love You, Man. In addition, Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories will be available on Netflix next month. What happened last month? Here are the Netflix releases for September 2017. Clockers, Crooklyn, Do the Right Thing, and Better Blues are among the departing titles, as are cult favorites such as Breaking Away, Sixteen Candles, and The Breakfast Club.

Older films coming to HBO include Russell Crowe’s maritime thriller “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman’s sweeping “Australia,” the comic-book blockbusters “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “Constantine,” and the original “The Terminator.” “Indignation,” based on the Philip Roth novel “Independence Day: Resurgence,” the alien invasion sequel “Independence Day: Resurgence,” Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report,” and Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Crooklyn,” and “Clockers” are among the films leaving at the end of October. Highly recommended show on HBO October 2017:
M. Night Shyamalan’s lengthy, silent recovery is close with Split. A superbly tense thriller about a guy with 23 separate personalities who kidnaps three young girls for unexplained purposes. It doesn’t even have Shyamalan’s trademark unexpected conclusion – it just gets the job done, with no funny business and a delightful mix of performances by James McAvoy. Yes, there is something incredible, and if you’ve managed to avoid spoilers all along, I won’t reveal it for you here, but it’s fantastic on sale on October 28th. Steven Spielberg very certainly had anything to do with it. It’s also possible that you’re aware of this. One of the most well-known is Steven Spielberg.

The second chapter is stunning. I don’t mean it in the manner you may think of “beautiful” when referring to a film; I’m not admiring its cinematography or special effects. They’re excellent and kinetic and beautifully put together, sure, but John Wick Chapter 2 is beautiful for simply existing; for conjuring up this zany universe of assassins and blowing it up even further; for believing in the need for specific, fun activities; and for allowing us all to bask in Keanu Reeves glowering for two hours. Chapter 2 is a professional, much like John Wick, and is here to deliver you a solid action movie. On sale on October 21. A filmmaker whose work is beloved by audiences and respected by critics and whose name is synonymous with cinema.
Directors’ best work for series on HBO October 2017:
This October, ease into sweater weather by curling up with HBO NOW. Pour a cup of hot apple cider and tune in to the new series, specials, and film premieres. Spielberg, a feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmaker Susan Lacy, analyses legendary director Steven Spielberg’s filmography in depth, illustrating how his experiences fuelled and modified his work over time. This month also sees the release of Entre Nos: Part 2, featuring Latino stand-up comedian Vladimir Caamano. To top it all off, director Richard Shepard’s Tokyo Project, starring Elisabeth Moss and GIRLS actress Ebon Moss-Bachrach as two strangers who embark on a clandestine relationship as they explore Tokyo’s back alleyways, ramen shops, and secret sake bars, opens this month.
Also launching this month are the horror films Split, The Darkness, The Purge: Election Year, and Lights Out, which will get you in the Halloween spirit. Fifty Shades Darker, Rock Dog, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, and The Shack are excellent choices for scaredy cats. Clockers, Crooklyn, Do the Right Thing, and Mo’ Better Blues are among the departing titles, as are cult favorites such as Breaking Away, Sixteen Candles, and The Breakfast Club.
